I always thought that these illegals were taking jobs from Americans, yet many Alabamian farmers are watching they're crops die in the fields because Americans won't take the jobs that migrant workers performed.

http://www.foxnews.com/poli...

"I've had people calling me wanting to work," Smith said. Of course, we have beaches and stuff, which makes me a-okay to have a little less freedom.

Seriously, though, I think the whole study is a little flawed. Granted, I haven't lived in a state other than Texas in almost a decade, but what I read of the states I have lived in (and the REPUBLIC :-) ) I currently live in makes me wonder... I have felt a lot more freedom in, say, Missouri than I did in Iowa. Could be anecdotal. Could be because of age... who knows.

On some specific points they raise about Texas:

"Texas prides itself on being a freedom-loving
state, and our rankings bear out that it is freer than
most other states. However, its policies are some-
times not as consistent with individual liberty as
the rhetoric of its officials and citizens would suggest. Indeed, Texas has slipped in the rankings and
has much room for improvement. Texas enjoys one
of the lowest tax burdens in the country and state
spending is relatively low."

Nailed it. Actually, state spending (esp. on education) is too low.

"Gun control is better than
average, but the state falls short on open-carry laws,
stricter-than-federal minimum age for purchase
rules, and dealer licensing."

Don't bring a gun into a bar or liquor store and you are mostly okay. I am okay with this "loss of freedom". (Forcing liquor stores to be separate from grocery stores, etc. is a bit silly.)

"Alcohol is less regulated
than in most other states"

I really hope that is not the case. In Texas, you may not:

buy liquor after 9 at a liquor store (only at a bar or restaurant)
buy beer after midnight (except at a bar or restaurant) (1 a.m. on Saturday nights)
buy liquor for off-site consumption (at home) except at a liquor store
buy liquor at all on Sundays (for off-site consumption)
buy beer or wine before noon on Sundays ("unless in the course of service of food")

I am sure I am forgetting a lot of regs. Our liquor laws are antiquated and counter-intuitive. Our laws practically beg you to drink and drive, rather than consume at home. (Disclaimer: I keep an eye on the laws mostly because I manage a bar, but also because I think they need reform.)

"Texas does not authorize sobriety checkpoints."
If that has not changed, Texas has ceded that authority to local municipalities. I haven't seen any yet, but they are supposed to be coming.

"Policy Recommendations
(1) Legalize casino gambling, slot machines, and
sports betting. These changes would be especially
useful as mechanisms for reducing the state’s bud-
get shortfall."

Galveston has still not recovered from Hurricane Ike 4 years ago. We are close, but we still aren't there. Gambling would be great for the barrier islands (Galveston, South Padre, etc.) as a test market. I understand how it could affect... well, those of us in the service industry that would take care of those gambling. We would all have to move to the mainland (a significant minority of us already live on the mainland), but I think it would help the economy significantly.

Getting gambling in Texas, even on the barrier islands requires an amendment to the state constitution. I'll bet (er... maybe not... it's illegal still...) we have at least 3 more decades before that happens. It would be voted down because... well, enough people think that it is immoral that it simply shouldn't happen.

All in all, in interesting study. The personal freedoms include most things "conservatives" and "liberals" want to discuss. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Republican New York Senator Comes Out For Gay Marriage With Awesome Quote - Featured on BuzzFeed

Couldn't agree more. These workers do choose to keep their job, they choose not to go out and find something else, or to put their jobs on the line for the morals/ethics.

That being said, the point I was trying to get across is that most of these people aren't getting off on having to do this. I'm sure there is the odd power-tripper among them, but I'm guessing that most of them, whether or not they're willing to say it, think these regulations are total crap, just like we do.

Do I want my kids groped by a TSA agent? Of course not. But that's mainly because I don't even see the point in searching a 10 or a 3 year old for explosives. I mean come on, at some point we need to apply some sort of common sense to our security policy. Nor do I think that a 75 year-old woman probably needs to be searched, or a man with a walker, or a 13 year old girl.

I've been on the receiving end of a customers self-righteous fury and it made me realize that treating people poorly doesn't get you anywhere, which is why I go out of my way to be polite and respectful to just about everyone I ever come into contact with. It doesn't mean that I look forward to enhanced pat downs (i probably won't even have the option of a scanner) should I for some reason be selected for extra attention.

That being said, I also make sure that when I am going through security I follow every regulation, I don't have metal on me when I go through the detector. My laptop is always out and in it's own bin. I don't carry-on anything that could potentially be considered a weapon (I did once and it cost me a neat little multi-tool). I've had my bag searched randomly, I've taken strollers through security, I've had to drink formula to prove it wasn't liquid explosive. The regulations, for the most part, are fairly ridiculous to me. But turning your anger on the guy who's job it is to perform them isn't very effective.

You, my wonderful and oft-missed friend, do not know that man/womans story. They may not have options. All I'm saying is that treating others poorly makes you the asshole, even if they started it.

Re: TSA pat downs: 'Horrible' screener job gets worse - Nov. 23, 2010

Would love to chat with you more about this some time, because it so rare that I disagree with you.

1. I have already pulled in more money this year than the aforementioned 29k/yr someone mentioned in the comments. That is being a bartender working on average 30 hours a week (family comes first, or I would have way more hours). Granted, I am on my wife's insurance plan, but if I wasn't, what my company offers couldn't be much better or worse than what the TSA offers.

2. All jobs, essentially, are customer service jobs. From what I have seen and heard recently, the first time I did anything like what the TSA is doing, I would be fired on the spot. Even after 8 years with the same company, they would get rid of me. Seriously. While my record over 8 years is almost spotless, one guest complaint that is bad enough could get me fired. Also, we are paying these people's salary.

3. If all these people are making is ~30k/yr, there are plenty of other things they could do (again, server, bartender, etc.) where they could actually make more money and, in many cases I will bet, would actually have better hours. At some point, you just have to say, "No. I will not do that. It is wrong on too many levels." Or, they could actually say to the passengers, "I am really sorry about this, but I have to do it to keep my job." Or, they could, you know, say okay to their boss and then not actually do as enhanced of a pat-down.

4. While I would love to give them some respect, there is no way I am going through the backscatter machine, nor my wife or children. We have our first trip in forever planned for April and I will not allow that to occur. I will allow myself to go through the enhanced pat-down if need be (as I will be more than willing to make a case out of it), but the wife and kids are not allowed. We will cancel the trip before that happens. I know you are as protective of your kids as I am. Would you let someone essentially fondle one of them because "it's the law" (which I don't believe it technically is)?

I (think I) totally see your point, and I do feel a little bit for the people who have been put in this situation since 9/11. But, it is beyond frustrating that so much security theater has happened ever since 9/11.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1612212726

In fact, I'm slightly ashamed that I posted this, knowing that I contributed, if in a mocking fashion, to the legitimacy of this story.

Hopefully this one ends like The Natural (the book).

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1612212726

Hmmm, I wish I had some kind of witty retort to that, but I don't.

Well played Mr. Sternberg, well played indeed.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1612212726

it's news because we live in a society that doesn't have royalty - so we build up people, then tear them down. also, we're not an intelligent country (to be fair, all evidence points to broader perspective that we're not an intelligent species - but that's a discussion for another day.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1269360154

Jim,

Shar'ia law is repressive, and I have studied it already. I am not debating Sahr'ia, it's merits or detriments, here. I am commenting on her claim that it is "taking hold" of cities in Michigan and Tennessee.

The Mayor of Dearborn would beg to differ with Ms. Angle, who should probably keep her comments limited to her own state.

As for the "infiltration of Islam", my home town is home to the first purpose built Mosque in the United States (Mother Mosque in Cedar Rapids, IA). That mosque was completed in 1934. They've been here nearly 80 years and I would be hard pressed to find a single example of Shar'ia having been incorporated into our local government or legal structure.

Additionally, I'm not talking about a muslim country, I'm talking about our country. Add to that that your argument is incorrect. There are large Christian populations in many Islamic countries (Egypt, Turkey, Palestine, Iran, Syria, Jordan). Not all, but some. That being said, in the United States we have a higher standard, one that allows for freedom of belief, so far as your beliefs do not injure another.

I would ask Ms. Angle to provide legitimate proof that Shar'ia law has been enacted anywhere in the United States before she makes these claims.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1269360154

She is absolutely right. Examine and see how repressive Sharia law is. Our system of law gives freedom. Their system gives only mindless obedience with death or some horrible punishment as a punishment for not following it. Look to any muslim country for multitude of examples. Go as a Christian with a Bible and try to share your faith in their country. Their goal is submission of all others to their beliefs or death.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1173368628

I don't know, I don't think the GOP wants to run afoul of Jobs, he could turn the entire Apple nation against them in a heartbeat.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1173368628

You forgot one:
- require all touchscreen devices to enable Flash in their web browsers

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1156344595

hahahahaha.

Re: http://microblog.greghollingsworth.org/post/1122355278

Man, yeah, I've been following this issue...just despicable.

Re: NYC receives $20 million in Federal Stimulus Funds to Expand Broadband Adoption

You're absolutely right, what was I thinking.

Re: NYC receives $20 million in Federal Stimulus Funds to Expand Broadband Adoption

dude you take that back.
